Half of Americans read at 6th grade level or below— and it’s crushing

  • Over half of American adults read below a 6th-grade level, affecting approximately 130 million people. This literacy gap has profound impacts on employment opportunities, income levels, and civic participation.

  • Low literacy contributes to a $2.2 trillion loss in potential economic output annually, increased healthcare costs, and higher rates of poverty and incarceration. It perpetuates intergenerational cycles of disadvantage, with children of low-literate parents more likely to struggle themselves.

  • Addressing the literacy crisis requires an investment at an early stage of life. Reading at grade level is the main driver to bettering this crisis. this effort can improve economic outcomes, reduce inequality, and foster a more informed and engaged society.
