Fort Worth ISD school board names Molinar as superintendent. Here’s why

Fort Worth ISD has officially named Dr. Karen Molinar as its next superintendent, marking a new chapter in the district’s leadership. With nearly three decades of experience in FWISD, Molinar has built a reputation as a collaborative and steady leader.

Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as FWISD faces declining enrollment, budget constraints, and a literacy crisis. Molinar has already begun tackling these challenges, leading conversations on potential school closures, advocating for a literacy-focused budget, and implementing a strategic reading plan to improve student outcomes.

Molinar’s leadership has been widely praised for its transparency and community engagement, with parents, educators, and trustees voicing strong support for her vision. As she takes on this new role, her focus remains on ensuring every child in Fort Worth ISD can read at grade level—a priority that will shape the district’s future.

Here’s why the Tarrant County government is stepping up to help boost reading rates

Tarrant County officials have taken a bold step in addressing the ongoing literacy crisis, unanimously passing a resolution urging all 20 school districts to implement urgent plans to improve reading rates. With nearly half of children unable to read at grade level, leaders emphasized the deep connection between literacy, crime, and economic opportunity.

County officials, including District Attorney Phil Sorrells and Judge Tim O’Hare, underscored how low literacy rates contribute to high incarceration rates, with 80% of Texas prison inmates being functionally illiterate. Commissioner Manny Ramirez, who led the resolution, described literacy as a key factor in creating a safer, more prosperous community.

Superintendents and community leaders also stressed the importance of early childhood reading habits, noting that too many children grow up without regular exposure to books. This resolution follows Fort Worth ISD’s recent commitment to making literacy its top priority, signaling a broader push to improve reading outcomes across Tarrant County.
