Fort Worth ISD looks to strengthen phonics lessons for a reading rate boost

Fort Worth ISD is doubling down on phonics as a key strategy to improve reading outcomes. Starting in the 2025–26 school year, the district will add a new, explicit phonics program for K-2 students alongside professional development for teachers. The change is part of a broader restructuring aimed at aligning with the science of reading—an evidence-based approach shown to work in states like Mississippi and Alabama. The district is also exploring a new dyslexia program that can serve both students with dyslexia and those who are simply behind. Superintendent Karen Molinar says it’s time to ensure every early reader gets the tools they need to succeed.

Amid dropping reading levels, professors find new ways to engage in a shifting classroom

As national reading scores decline post-pandemic, UT Austin professors are rethinking how they teach. With students showing lower reading comprehension and patience for traditional texts, faculty are cutting back on reading assignments and embracing audiobooks, e-books, and video-based learning. Professors emphasize that it’s not a lack of effort—it’s a shift in how students process information today. The goal is to meet students where they are and still deliver deep, meaningful learning in a rapidly changing educational landscape.
